Discover The Pickled Onion

Tucked away in the heart of North Raleigh, The Pickled Onion is one of those rare neighborhood gems that manages to feel both lively and familiar from the moment you step inside. Located at 8470 Honeycutt Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615, United States, it’s the kind of place where the scent of sizzling burgers and fresh-cut fries greets you before you even see the menu. I’ve visited several times-once for a quick lunch after work, another for a late-night game with friends-and every visit left a distinct impression of comfort, quality, and community.

What sets this diner apart isn’t just the food but the atmosphere it cultivates. The interior gives off an easygoing charm-wooden tables, local memorabilia on the walls, and the hum of laughter from both regulars and newcomers. It’s the kind of place where servers remember your favorite drink, and there’s always a friendly “How’ve you been?” waiting at the bar. One evening, I watched a local musician perform acoustic covers while families tucked into hearty plates of wings and sliders. It’s a mix of Southern hospitality and casual sports-bar energy that feels completely authentic.

Speaking of food, the menu at The Pickled Onion is broad enough to please everyone without overwhelming you with choices. The fried pickles are the star appetizer-crispy, tangy, and perfectly seasoned. The “bacon cheeseburger” is another must-try, featuring thick-cut bacon and melted cheddar that drips onto the toasted brioche bun just enough to tempt another bite. For those who prefer lighter fare, the “grilled chicken salad” is surprisingly satisfying, with fresh greens and a house-made vinaigrette that strikes the right balance between tangy and smooth. They also serve a great selection of local craft beers on tap, along with cocktails that rival those in downtown lounges.

From a practical standpoint, it’s easy to see why this place earns such high ratings on review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor. Consistency matters, and The Pickled Onion delivers every time. According to local dining surveys from Raleigh Magazine, over 80% of respondents mentioned that they return not just for the food but for the friendly service and neighborhood vibe. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident-it’s built over time through trust and genuine care for customers.

The restaurant’s team, led by seasoned managers with years of experience in the North Carolina food scene, pays close attention to quality sourcing. Their produce is locally supplied when possible, and the meats are always fresh, never frozen. It’s a small detail that makes a noticeable difference in every dish. I once chatted with one of the chefs, who mentioned how they marinate their chicken overnight using a special blend of herbs-something you can taste in every bite of their “chicken wrap.”

There’s also something to be said about their ability to adapt. Whether it’s hosting trivia nights, catering to private events, or offering seasonal specials, The Pickled Onion keeps things dynamic without losing its core identity. During my last visit, they had a “fall menu” featuring pumpkin spice cocktails and sweet potato fries that perfectly captured the season’s warmth. The flexibility and creativity shown by the staff speak volumes about their commitment to making each visit unique.

For families, the location couldn’t be better. Situated near residential neighborhoods and parks, it’s a go-to weekend spot after soccer practice or a stroll through nearby trails. The ample parking space and relaxed dress code make it easy to drop in anytime-no reservations, no fuss. Parents enjoy the friendly bar area while kids dive into classic comfort food.

Dining out here feels less like an outing and more like joining a local tradition. Over time, you start recognizing faces, remembering the rhythm of laughter during karaoke nights, or catching that familiar scent of wings on a Friday evening. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a gathering place where food, music, and good company come together effortlessly.

Whether you’re new to Raleigh or a longtime local looking for a dependable dining spot, The Pickled Onion remains one of the area’s most beloved hangouts. With delicious comfort food, attentive service, and a welcoming vibe, it continues to set the bar high for what a neighborhood restaurant should be.

  • Really nice dinner here on a Sat night over Labor Day weekend. The restaurant is very spacious and they have TVs everywhere, including one at each booth. Would be a great place to come watch the big game or NFL on Sundays. Our server was a little cold at first, but she warmed up and gave us great service. She admitted it was a long day and probably had some rough customers. Pretzel bites and beer cheese were delicious! So was our quarter wedge salad, wings and bourbon chicken. My 9 year old enjoyed the tenders and fries. We will be back to try more menu items. My only complaint is that its not an easy place to walk to from the parking lot. My 81 year old MIL had a difficult time maneuvering through all the tables and chairs and people out front to get to the restaurant.

  • As far as a sports bar goes, they've got it all covered. Great service from Mr.Javier and Mrs Brandy. I had the Ahi Tuna sandwich, and it was wonderful, cooked perfectly. It was absolutely worth the price. They had all the on going games covered.

  • Love this place! What a great addition to Lafayette Village! The staff is awesome. My son Colin is on the spectrum and couldn’t wait for this place to open. The staff treats him with so much love and understanding! I think he knows everyone on a first name basis. Thanks everyone for your kindness, great service and amazing food!

  • Huge shoutout to The Pickled Onion & their new location in Lafayette Village! 10/10 recommend checking them out :) (Long story ahead!) For some context, my boyfriend and I were looking for a new close spot for dinner tonight and came across The Pickled Onion on Apple maps. We hadn’t heard of it before, so we decided to check it out… only to discover once we got there they were seemingly closed for a private event. We almost turned around, but a super friendly guy at the door waved us in and welcomed us like we were meant to be there. Welllll…. Turns out that guy was the owner, Greg! He explained they weren’t officially open yet and this was a soft opening for invited guests. But instead of turning us away, he insisted we stay - treated us to dinner and drinks, gave us some fun merch, and made us feel right at home. it was seriously such a kind thing to do and was so unexpected. The food was super good - the shrimp tacos hit the spot (pic below), and my boyfriend’s burger was gone in seconds- and the whole vibe of the place was upbeat and welcoming. The staff were all lovely, and the space had a great energy. It’s also worth noting that (although we didn’t pay for our food this time), the prices were all very reasonable and more than worth it for the quality of the food. I don’t usually expect a lot food-wise from sports bar type restaurants but I was genuinely so impressed!!! We’ll definitely be back once they officially open, and if this night was any indication, The Pickled Onion is going to be one of our favorites for a while to come!!! Huge thanks again to Greg and the team for their generosity and hospitality - what a wonderful evening that made for the highlight of our week!!!

  • Just had an amazing experience at this new spot…everything from the food to the service was top notch. Jordan, CJ, Jonas, and Mark were all on point with their service…attentive, friendly, and professional. Chrissy, the GM, is clearly running a tight (and very impressive) ship. The fish and chips were perfectly cooked…crispy, hot, and full of flavor. We ended the meal by sharing the turtle New York cheesecake, and let’s just say… I’ll be dreaming about it for a long time. This place is a must-try!

  • I had the Chicago Beef and Jalapeno mac and cheese. They were great! Also loved the outdoor seating. Will definitely come back.

  • We like the other two so we tried this new Pickled Onion location on a Friday evening. They had live music starting at 9:00 but asked for a table in the room off to the side to avoid some of the volume. If you've been to the others, then you'll find this one about the same regarding the noise and televisions. The menu is the same and the food was great. The beer was cold, prices were reasonable and the service was great. Happy to have them nearby!
